Total Eclipse of the Son

On August 21, a good portion of the US will experience a total eclipse of the sun. Crowds from all over will be gathering under the best path of this celestial phenomenon in order to get a view of the resulting dark aura.

In ancient times, a solar eclipse was seen as a bad omen, causing great fear and trepidation of the supernatural when the sun would suddenly stop shining during the day. Today, the result is just the opposite… hotels and campgrounds along the path of the eclipse are already booked to capacity for the upcoming date.

Viewing one of God’s creative wonders – that happens once in a lifetime – is a real treat. Yet it is enlightening to see the spiritual comparison when darkness attempts to hide the light. The Gospel of John declares, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1: 4-5)
All throughout time, the devil has worked to cover up the light of Christ with his deceptions and temptations in order to draw mankind into his wickedness. Evil searches to find relief from a holy and righteous God. Apart from God, fallen creation does not know the light of Christ and joins the devil in attempting to eclipse His brilliance.

On one day (during one Passover), the devil had thought he accomplished his evil plan for good when the Son of God hung dying on the cross. Matthew writes “from the sixth hour until the ninth there was darkness over all the land.” (Matthew 27: 45). But darkness didn’t win… it does not have the power to overcome. Christ arose from the grave, revealing His victory over sin, death, and the devil, shining the light of His salvation on all who believe in Him (John 1:12).

Today, many children around the world are pulled into a life of darkness. It seems as if evil and wickedness have a permanent eclipse over their lives. Today, God calls us to be like John the Baptizer, bearing witness about the light. Our LeadaChild ministry has the primary goal of sharing the light of Christ with children around the world through Christian education. Help us shine God’s love and grace into the lives of the children, giving them the opportunity to attend a Christian school or ministry. Let your love eclipse the darkness!

Jesus, the one who gives each of us the victory!
